International Public and Private Law from the Civil Law Perspective

Summary

On Saturday 3rd July 2021, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., the CAJO hosted the second of its 2021 programming as part of its virtual conference year. International Public and Private Law from the Civil Law Perspective: Relevance for Caribbean Judicial Practice was facilitated by Professor Flora Goudappel, Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Curacao, Mr Rogier van den Heuvel, Attorney at Law, Justice Jacob Wit, Judge, Caribbean Court of Justice, and Justice Mauritsz de Kort, Vice-President, Joint Court of Justice.

 

Professor Goudappel presented first on Public International Law from the Civil Law perspective which was followed by commentary from Justices Wit and de Kort and moderated Q&A. After a short break, the same was done for Private International Law which was presented on by Mr Rogier van den Heuvel.

 

The session brought together judicial officers from over fifteen Caribbean regions. A total of seventy-eight participants joined the session. This figure was notably lower than the 204 registrants as Hurricane Elsa had significant impact on northern Caribbean islands.
